Christmas Party and Run Races for the Indigent Kids of Daang Hari

Hi everyone,

Pinay In Action is holding a Christmas Party with Run Races and other games this Dec 11 in Daang Hari for the barefoot running kids.  If you would like to participate by joining and helping out you can do this just by showing up and playing with them and/ or you can also give some gifts to make their day.

Here are the Christmas Party Shirts we will be giving them, worked on the designs based on Senator Pia’s idea.

Hope you can join us!!!

Coach Ani

Pinoy Hospitality in Hawaii :)

I’ve been to Kona only twice so far, but it feels like my second home because of all the Filipinos on the Big Island!  I could never thank each and every one of them enough.  Nel Venzon, the best tour guide around, is always ready to take care of us. Our homestays were both Pinoys, first we stayed at Gelly Borromeo’s place in Alii Lani, and this time we stayed with Bong Agatep and his family in Lanakoi, just up Hualalai road…. very conveniently located, except for the fact that we had to climb uphill every time we went home haha… great workout in our huffies that’s for sure!

Of course our day would not be complete without hanging out at Tante’s… which served as our base while in town. It makes me proud to see the Filipino Resto brimming with so many people… and of course Kuya Tante and Ate Telly and the rest of the staff are just wonderful!  On race morning we even watched the swim portion from the roofdeck… if you look closely at the picture in the newspaper, I am one of the tiny tiny people, wearing a pink shirt, with the white headsweats visor and a dslr camera (thank you nanay for lending it to me!) … well of course you will need a magnifying glass haha… i just found that so cool!

I did some artwork with cray pas that I found in Borders for Tante and Bong’s family… a small way of showing my appreciation.

Paper Jam

Hope everyone had a Happy Easter!

It’s been ages since I last touched a paintbrush and canvas and I knew I would not start soon on my own because I would always have my busy schedule as a convenient excuse, so when my sister Sinag asked me a few weeks ago to join her in her exhibit at Likha Diwa vegetarian restaurant in UP Diliman I deliberated about it for a minute or two and just said yes.  It’s about time, I thought.

To be honest I am just happy about the fact that I started again, no matter what the result was.  Aside from being an athlete I am an artist at heart and will always be one, and I cannot keep denying that aspect of myself.  So I am again thankful for my sister and for Likha Diwa for giving me this opportunity to renew my love for painting.  Because of this show I have now decided to create more works in the near future, and hopefully on a regular basis now.

A very special thanks to our brother Diwa for contributing his talent and time to our show by playing the hegalong.  He recently launched the Hegalong Project, an endeavour which is very dear to his heart and which makes his family proud:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpbx8qCOqWI

P.S. The papercuts in the pictures below are the creations of my sister and the small canvases are by yours truly 🙂

Anti VAWC Exhibit at the Senate

Senator Pia and her staff recently unveiled an exhibit with information on Anti Violence Against Women and Children.  We were also able to showcase the works of the girls we had an art session with  Marillac.  Am glad the students who came to visit are learning about being empowered women early on in life.

Teaching Art in Marillac Hills Center for Women

I am always grateful whenever I am given the chance to share my time and knowledge to deserving individuals, as was the case this past weekend.  Senator Pia Cayetano and her trusty staff coordinated the activity and when I showed up, our 30 chosen girls had their art materials already neatly arranged in front of them.

I brought out a couple of beautiful artworks which my sister Sinag had lovingly made and showed it to them.  I told them we would do something similar and that they would be able to come up with their own masterpiece when our session was over but they looked doubtful.  It seemed that this was the first time they would try their hand at such a thing.  I smiled quietly and proceeded with the instructions.  Even the rest of  Senator Pia’s staff created their own artwork.

They say a picture paints a thousand words.  Here are several photos which I took of some of the girls’ finished products.  Enough said 🙂

Sunday Morning with Piolo and Manny at the TIMEX RUN, Sunday afternoon with family at the Global Pinoy Bazaar

One of the perks of being a Timex athlete, aside from getting really cool Timex gear, is meeting other Timex athletes!  Me and my gal pals Tessa Leana Lara and Lea were bent on having a blast for this particular run, and we did…. and we even saw other Timex athletes on the road, like Team Timex, Coach Rio, Polo Tri, and, ahem.. Piolo Pascual.  Not a bad deal eh?

To make the morning even more awesome, we watched the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight in the Timex tent with other runners.  It was my first time to watch a boxing match with so many other people, I didn’t realize how much fun it was!  Met new friends as well, like DJ Hilary of 88.3 and Leo, whom I always see running in Ultra but was never introduced to.  Manny outdid himself and claimed his seventh world title, and I could feel the whole tent bursting with Pinoy Pride.

After this I crossed EDSA to meet up with my family at the Global Pinoy Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent.  It was a great collection of Filipino Made products at bargain prices.  Kudos to Yabang Pinoy for putting up a splendid display!  Pinoy Pride, indeed was the order of the day. I love it!

Whirlwind Weekend Part 1: Kulay at Kislap 3 Exhibit, LIKHA DIWA

My sister Sinag and my niece Raya opened their third Mother-Daughter Exhibit entitled KULAY AT KISLAP 3 on Nov 6, Friday at Likha Diwa Cafe in U.P. Diliman Quezon City. It is a good collection of mixed media work…I bought a couple of pieces myself! Exhibit will be ongoing till the end of the month.

My brother and his musical group, MAKILING, performed and delivered the goods as always.  I’m very happy to be part of such an artistic family 🙂

Putrajaya Ironman 70.3 2009

DSC06704

Well it’s been about 10 days now and I have been slow to blog about this race. I was kind of wishy-washy in joining it because:

1. The organization was also slow to update us on the status of the race. I was already on the plane and brief thoughts of “what if I wasn’t properly registered cause my name isn’t even on the site?” popped into my head.

2. My heart was not into it because of the recent devastation in the Philippines brought about by Typhoon Ondoy.

3. My training had really been only good enough for a sprint, not a half  ironman (my friend Paolo even pointed out to me when I told him this– “heck, more like a mini-sprint!” as he knew of my crazy schedule).

4. My fellow Ironfools Pia and Joey cancelled, for understandable reasons. Our kababayans needed help.

Oh well, you get the picture.  Naturally it is not recommended to go into a race with this mindset, and I highly discourage it, but there I was.  My only bright spot was that Patrice was going to be there, and I thought to myself well that’s more than enough reason to make the trip!

DSC06725

It turned out to be the right decision.  It was a beautiful place, a wonderful hotel, and a well-organized race.  Being the budget airline kind of gal that I am, I flew in at the God-forsaken hour of 3am, and was lucky enough to be woken up by the hotel cleaning staff just before I missed the free buffet breakfast.  It was a yummy spread of Asian food that I loved, and I started to feel good about coming. I went down to register, saw Emma Bishop of  TBB among others and we had a nice chat.  Later in the afternoon, Monica and LC from our National Team also arrived, followed by Peter the next day.  So all in all we were four Filipinos. Although lean and mean, I knew we could still REPRESENT!

DSC06706

I can honestly say that I had fun during the swim, bike, and run portions… even though it was sometimes lonely–but that is long distance racing for you!  Being part of the last wave on the swim was not very ideal for me as I had to go through a lot of the men’s previous waves… but I didn’t really mind, I felt like I should be taking it easy anyway.  The bike course is beautiful, very nice roads but we had some confusion about the loops, which we gladly sorted out.  As for the run, I liked the idea that we were running on the main road of the CBD but there was nobody, no cars, etc.  Putrajaya is a new city the Malaysians created to relocate all their government buildings, and since it was a weekend, they obviously had no work.  Very Cool.

I thought my time was really slow (okay, it was really slow) but then everyone seemed to be a bit slower that normal too because for some reason it was not a very fast course.  But it didn’t matter, I am always happy to race.  Happier still was the fact that somehow, I finished first in my category (I suspect it was because of my expert nutrition from Hammer, as I really do not know where else to credit it to). My effort earned me another Clearwater 70.3 World Championships slot, and so I took it, just in case.

My equestrian friends from Malaysia, Nazroff and Qabil, dropped by to see me as they were in the area for a show jumping event.  Was glad to see old buddies!

So there it is…another race in Malaysia, another good memory.  I like our neighboring country’s triathlon events.  I am sure I will be back for a few more next year!
