XTerra Putik Pare Race: Fun in the Mud

The Xterra Putik Pare Event held yesterday in Nuvali, Sta Rosa Laguna was something I had been looking forward to watching all year as I joined the race last year and had heaps of fun…dirty fun, as the name connotes, but good fun nonetheless. Participants of Putik Pare basically have to come in pairs- one does a bike+run, while the other does a run+bike, all off-road, after which they run to the finish together.

Pia and Belle, my girlfriends who came fresh from their XTerra World Champs Maui experience were joining the race and I thought it would be cool to cheer for them in the mud pit- a trademark of the Putik Pare race.

My husband Dan whom I found out does not really have a clue about mountain biking (sorry baby, just an observation) decided to join at the last minute too after deplaning from his Taiwan 70.3 just a week before.  Good thing Neil Catiil from the RP Tri Team agreed to be his teammate, and thanks to the loaner Elsworth MTB from Tyrone Regaliza and sponsored entry from TIMEX they were all set!

On race morning I donned one of my remaining stretchy Adidas Climacool shirts which still fit my bulging belly so I was prepared to support/ heckle all the racers. I thought it was very nice to go to an event wherein triathletes are not so pressured about their performance/ PRs…just out to have a good time with buddies!

I was happy to see Polo Tri teens Marc Altura and Javi Ocampo, whom I have seen blossom into the formidable athletes they are now from coaching them in the SuperTriKids and IronKids squads, looking game and raring to get down and dirty for something different than their normal sprint distance races.

I ended up spectating with good friends Alex Bok of  TBB, David Almendral and Ton Gatmaitan of Gatorade.  They had also decided to set up shop by the mud pit and cheer for friends. The mud pit design this year was more watery than that of last year–but longer.  It was a good place to watch as this was the last leg they had to do before heading to the finish line.

One by one the pairs came in, and it was interesting to see how they maneuvered the brown waters–marching, trudging, sloshing–some even swam, using different strokes at that. I conclude that backstroke is most effective as demonstrated by Noel Salvador!

The eventual overall winners for the 3 categories were:

Congratulations to XTerra Phil/ Sunrise Events Inc led by Fred Uytengsu, Guy Concepcion, Princess Galura, and the Technical Crew of Neville Manaois and Jeremy Go for a very well organized race.  Hope I can get my feet dirty again for next year’s event!

Post 8th Gabriel’s Symphony Event Update: Thank You!

September 4, 2010: Thanks to its loyal supporters, another Gabriel’s Symphony has been successfully staged.  The event is an annual fundraising  for kids in need organized by Sen Pia Cayetano in memory of her late son Gabriel Cayetano Sebastian, who died in 2001 from complications of Trisomy 13, a rare congenital chromosomal condition.
It was a truly blessed and special celebration. To highlight some of the activities: Two Ironmen, Maiqui Dayrit & Andrew Arellano, and Half Ironman Willy Chiongbian, raced for children in need of operation and other medical procedures; the SuperTrikids Aquathlon and Triathlon showcased the country’s fine young triathletes; a Top Draw Animation Art Class, Sportsfest, Arnis Class, Shoe Donation from Planet Sports had our 40 Indigent Children beaming with joy; and a Sunset Run capped the day. All in all, beautiful music orchestrated by Pia Cayetano and her crew…all in the memory of her son Gabriel, who for sure was smiling down on each and every participant.
Among others, some personalities who showed up to support included boxing champ Nonito Donaire and wife Rachel, actress Bianca Gonzales, Sports Unlimited hosts Dyan Castillejo and Marc Nelson, David Charlton, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, Sandra Schramm Cayetano, Ren Cayetano, cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao, Director Lino Cayetano, Coke executive and Malaya columnist JB Baylon, Carewell’s Robert Suntay, Comelec Comm. and cycling enthusiast Gregorio Larrazabal, Anton Gonzales of Planet Sports, Fitness First Phils’ Mark Ellis, Top Draw Animation’s Wayne and Stella Dearing, animator Nary Jamlig, Ultramarathoner Joy Rojas, members of various triathlon teams and elite triathletes Arland Macasieb, Alessandra Gonzales, George Vilog and Noel Salvador. Race/event coordinators- Ani De Leon, Mailet Ancheta and Coach Rick Reyes of TRAP.

Teaching Art in Marillac Hills Center for Women

I am always grateful whenever I am given the chance to share my time and knowledge to deserving individuals, as was the case this past weekend.  Senator Pia Cayetano and her trusty staff coordinated the activity and when I showed up, our 30 chosen girls had their art materials already neatly arranged in front of them.

I brought out a couple of beautiful artworks which my sister Sinag had lovingly made and showed it to them.  I told them we would do something similar and that they would be able to come up with their own masterpiece when our session was over but they looked doubtful.  It seemed that this was the first time they would try their hand at such a thing.  I smiled quietly and proceeded with the instructions.  Even the rest of  Senator Pia’s staff created their own artwork.

They say a picture paints a thousand words.  Here are several photos which I took of some of the girls’ finished products.  Enough said 🙂

Coaching, lately…

Here are more random shots of some of my athletes in training (apologies in advance if you don’t find your photo here guys)…. am always proud of each and every one of them and get rewarded 100x more because of their own race experiences as opposed to just my own!  The whole year round, somebody needs to prepare for one competition or another so I am always watching out for them 🙂 Thankfully I also have Coaches Noel Salvador, Patrick Joson, and Paolo Defensor to thank for always helping me out when I am away!

7th Gabriel’s Symphony 12-Hour Multi-Sport Celebration in Memory of Gabriel

We couldn’t be more grateful with the success of this year’s Gabriel’s Symphony.  Our tagline has always been “Making Children’s Lives Better.”  And we definitely achieved that with this event in more ways than one–even the adults were happy!

Our usual events went by quickly, Fun Runs, SuperTrikids Aquathlon and Triathlon, Pinay In Action All Womens Tri, Corporate and Individual Relays….  and this year we had some new additions, including the CareWell Bikes For Hope wherein we raffled off a Giant OCR Bike, an IRONMAN Distance Relay, and Demonstrations in Swimming and Table Tennis by Visually Impaired Children (they were amazing, by the way!).

Maiqui Dayrit, who is always our top individual fundraiser, raised close to P280,000.00 for doing his annual Ironman Distance Triathlon! He is a rockstar. He did it in a time of 11:33 too!!!  Well within 12hours.

Thank you so much to all the participants who supported the cause.  You have really made a huge difference in a child’s life!!! http://gabrielsymphony.com/gabriel/gabrielarticle.php?recordID=3

Thanks to Andie Lagman, Paolo Sauler, and Celda Santos for the pictures.
